Our Work

Maintaining the Essence of Chaffee County’s Heritage

Since 2004, our board of directors and staff have dedicated their time and resources to maintaining Chaffee County’s heritage for future generations – from designating the Collegiate Peaks Scenic and Historic Byway to registering historic sites and persevering viewsheds.

Collegiate Peaks Scenic & Historic Byway

Designated in 2005, the Collegiate Peaks Scenic and Historic Byway travels through the middle of the Upper Arkansas River Valley along the Arkansas River’s famous whitewater canyons and parallels dramatic 14,000-foot peaks.

The byway is 57 miles long and traverses the entire length of Chaffee County where visitors can experience a bounty of natural and historical resources.

Community Education

Along the Collegiate Peaks Scenic and Historic Byway, you’ll find interpretive signage and interactive displays. This vital piece of community education developed by Chaffee County Heritage helps visitors visualize the importance of each area and gain a deeper level of historical information.

Chaffee County Historic Registries

Our goal is to list Chaffee County’s most historically and architecturally significant buildings, structures, and sites in the National Register of Historic Places and the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties.

Since 2015, we’ve registered 18 historic places. Learn more about these locations by exploring our interactive map.

Monthly Meetings

The Chaffee Heritage Board meets each month to discuss updates on projects, community needs and partnership opportunities. Curious about what we discuss? Review our meeting notes or join an upcoming meeting.
