History of the Collegiate Peaks Scenic & Historic Byway

The vision of the Collegiate Peaks Scenic and Historic Byway began with the desire to bring awareness of the region, educate residents and visitors and preserve the scenic viewshed.

Utilizing grant funds provided by the Federal Highway Administration and the Colorado Department of Transportation lands along the byway were evaluated for their conservation value based on their importance for scenic views, agricultural production, wildlife habitat, proximity to conserved lands, and historic significance. Designated in 2005, the Collegiate Peaks Scenic and Historic Byway became Colorado’s 25th official byway. Learn more about Colorado’s other scenic and historic byways.

This unique lollipop-shaped byway connects the thriving towns of Buena Vista, Poncha Springs, and Salida, encouraging tourism and supporting local businesses.
